Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a robot help you doing your household chores and controlling your electronic devices at home? Here is Vesta, a home robot from Amazon.

Jeff Bezos started amazon in the year 1994 as an online bookstore. Amazon later started to sell streaming and downloading of videos, MP3 and audio books. Now Amazon is the largest internet retailer that sells apparel, electronics, furniture, food, jewellery, cloud services, etc. Ten years ago, Amazon introduced Kindle to promote reading from a digital device. Four years ago, Amazon Echo was released, which enabled the users to talk to a computer.

Amazon is now working on Vesta, which is a top secret project. It is named after the virgin goddess of the hearth, home, and family in Roman religion. This project is managed by Gregg Zehr. He runs the Amazon’s Lab126 where hardware research and development are done in Sunnyvale, California. Lab126 is responsible for Amazon devices such as the Echo speakers, Fire TV set-top-boxes, Fire tablets and the Fire Phone.

Vesta project seems to have started a few years ago. But amazon is now trying to accelerate the process. They are hiring new Principle sensor engineers and software engineers in the robotics division. They are also planning on testing the new Vesta in their employees’ home. Amazon is expected to release Vesta for the consumers in the beginning of 2019.

Features:

Even though we are unsure about what tasks Vesta might perform, there are a few insights given by those who are familiar with the project. The size of the robot and the locomotion systems are unknown. But the prototype has advanced cameras and computer vision software. It can move around, like a driverless car. The work on computer vision is managed by Former Apple executive Max Paley.

It is the advancements in cameras, voice activation, artificial technology and computer vision, that has made it possible for the creation of Vesta. Amazon has also agreed to partially reduce the cost of Vesta for the Amazon Prime users.
