Dating is when two people meet, to evaluate one another’s suitability as a long term companion or spouse. Online dating apps like Tinder, Hinge, Coffee Meets Bagel, and the League are an alternate way to meet potential dates.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook has announced a new feature that helps the users to find a date on Facebook. He said “The new dating feature is for building real long-term relationships, not just hookups. If we’re focused on helping people build meaningful relationships, this is perhaps the most meaningful of all”
A new Dating Profile:
Users who are above 18 years old will be able to create a separate profile. This profile is not linked to the main profile and is invisible to the user’s Facebook friends. It displays potential matches based on your dating preferences, location and interests.
The user can then either click on “Interested” or “Pass” button. The matches will be shown with their name, age, location and a picture. Sharing other information such as job, education, etc. is optional.
Facebook will only allow the user to send a single text message to start the conversation. This step is taken to prevent irrelevant pictures or links.
Facebook officials said “Many people were already using Facebook for dating and we want to support that in a safe way. This could be life-changing for the more than 200 million Facebook users who list themselves as single”.
Facebook already has a bigger audience spread across the world and has user profiles built upon years of information. The online dating websites and apps now have Facebook as their new competitor.
Data Privacy and Issues:
Facebook knows a lot of information about its users already. In fact, they know a lot more than what the users intend to share. A dating profile will only collect more data from the users that is highly sensitive. With the dating service, Facebook will be able to collect information like, the people you are interested in and how much you really want a relationship.
Facebook has a lot of fake profiles and scammers. This new feature would only make this problem worse. It would expose the users to greater risks by exposing them to unknown malicious strangers and financial risks.
Facebook has a more sophisticated ad-targeting. Which means that when an advertiser knows that you are dating, it is more likely that you will get advertisements for the products you might be interested in, like new clothes or makeup.
Facebook already has to deal with data and privacy issues which they said might take three years to fix. But they made time to create a new feature in a short period of time. Testing for this dating service will begin in a few months.
